Revslip alternatives, and when to buy one instead

Most Revslip alternatives answer a different question, and three of the best are free. Where Screaming Frog and Microsoft Clarity are the better buy, what the research says about audits versus watching users, and who should not buy Revslip.

"Never heard of Revslip. What else is there?" Fair question, and the honest answer is that most Revslip alternatives are not alternatives at all. They answer a different question, and three of the best ones are free.

What are the real Revslip alternatives?

There are four worth naming, and they split by the question you are asking. Screaming Frog and Semrush audit crawl health. Microsoft Clarity and Hotjar show you what visitors did. Lighthouse scores speed. Revslip reads the page as a buyer would and prices what it finds.

  • Crawl health. Screaming Frog, over 300 SEO issues, 500 URLs free, then £199 a year.
  • What visitors did. Microsoft Clarity, recordings and heatmaps, free with no traffic cap.
  • Page speed. Lighthouse, open source, already inside your Chrome browser.
  • Why the page does not sell. Revslip, 200+ conversion signals, priced per finding.

Notice what is missing. Not one of them does what another one does. Which is why "alternative" is the wrong word here, and why a feature-count comparison would tell you nothing useful. We ranked the paid field by where each one loses in the best website audit tools. This page does the opposite job and sends you away where you should go.

When is Screaming Frog or Semrush the better buy?

When your problem is that pages cannot be found or crawled properly. Screaming Frog audits over 300 SEO issues at domain scale, crawling 500 URLs free and unlimited URLs on a £199 annual licence. Revslip runs no domain-scale SEO crawl at all. Buy the crawler.

Be blunt about it. If you run 4,000 product URLs and suspect duplicate titles, broken canonicals or hreflang mistakes spread across them, Screaming Frog is the correct purchase and Revslip is not. Revslip crawls your key pages: homepage, landing, product, pricing, contact. Five pages read deeply is a different job from four thousand pages checked shallowly, and when the four thousand is your actual problem, the £199 beats us outright.

Not sure which problem you have? Run a free audit first.

When is Microsoft Clarity the better buy?

When you need to watch a real person struggle. Clarity gives you session recordings and heatmaps free, with no limits on traffic, and says it runs on over 2 million sites and apps. Revslip has no recordings and no heatmaps. If seeing is the thing you need, install Clarity today.

Worth saying: Clarity costs nothing and takes about ten minutes to install, so there is no version of this where we tell you to skip it. Run it alongside whatever else you buy. And if you were about to compare Hotjar as a separate option, Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare, which says the two platforms have merged into one, so heatmaps, recordings and surveys now sit inside Contentsquare's tiers rather than Hotjar's own. We wrote about what heatmaps cannot see separately, and that argument is about scope, not about whether to install one.

What do the studies say about audits versus watching users?

They find different problems, and the overlap is smaller than either camp admits. Across five published comparisons, expert inspection and user testing agreed on an average of 36% of problems found. Inspection missed 49% of what real users ran into. Neither method is the full picture.

Then the largest study of this disagrees with the small ones. In Rolf Molich's CUE-4 experiment, seventeen professional teams independently evaluated the same booking site. Nine ran usability tests, eight used their preferred inspection technique. His conclusion was that inspection is as effective and efficient as usability testing, and that testing, like any other method, overlooks some problems, even critical ones.

Why do they disagree? Because the small comparisons treat user testing as the correct answer and score inspection against it, so anything users hit that an inspector missed counts as a miss by definition. CUE-4 compared the pattern of problems each professional team found and let neither method own the list. Change the denominator and the loser changes.

Here is the part worth holding on to. Molich sells usability testing and training, and his own study says inspection matches it. A finding that cuts against the business of the person who published it is worth more than one that flatters it, and that cuts both ways on this page.

An audit and a session recording are not competing answers. They are competing questions.

Five-study synthesis from MeasuringU, which sells UX research and has a stake in testing. CUE-4 from Rolf Molich's own write-up. Crawler figures from Screaming Frog's own page, recordings from Microsoft Clarity, speed scoring from the Lighthouse docs, and the merger from Contentsquare.

What does Revslip do that none of these do?

It reads the rendered page the way a buyer reads it, then puts money against each problem. Across 134 businesses audited so far, findings come back with a severity, a revenue impact band and an explicit hypothesis, plus a conservative monthly range built from your business model rather than one generic sum.

Treat that 134 carefully. Sites that get audited are sites whose owners already suspected something was wrong, so the problem rate in our own corpus runs higher than the web at large. It is a sample of the worried, not a random sample of the web.

Three things here are genuinely ours. Market research reads competitors' claims, offers and friction, and maps which audience pains your site ignores. Code snippets hand back up to four ready-to-paste components in your own framework, colours and fonts. And a first-party snippet tracks click-through rate on elements you tag, which turns a fix list into something you can check.

Paste a URL and see the findings priced before comparing anything.

Who should not buy Revslip?

Four buyers, and we would rather say so here than have you find out later. Anyone who needs session recordings or heatmaps. Anyone running a technical SEO crawl at domain scale. Anyone who needs accessibility conformance signed off. And anyone who needs a real experimentation platform with significance testing and revenue attribution.

The buyer we should send elsewhere If you already know which page is losing money and you only need to prove a variant beat the control with statistical confidence, buy a proper experimentation tool instead of us. Our tracking compares click-through rate on elements you tag, and you assign the variants yourself. That is measurement rather than an experiment, so pair it with Clarity for the why and a stats tool for the proof.

There is a fifth case we will not dress up. If you have already had a good consultant go through the site this quarter, you do not need us this quarter. Run the audit in three months when the fixes have had time to show up or fail, and compare against what the consultant predicted. We put that comparison side by side in the audit versus consultant piece.

If you want the longer first-party version, we published a Revslip review covering what it does, what it costs and who should not buy it.

Common questions

Is Revslip a replacement for Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity?

No. Revslip has no session recordings and no heatmaps, and Clarity is free, so run both. Revslip tells you what is probably wrong and roughly what it is worth. Clarity shows you a person hitting it.

Does Revslip replace a technical SEO crawler?

No. Revslip crawls key pages rather than every URL on a domain. For canonicals, hreflang and duplicate titles at scale, use Screaming Frog or Semrush. The two jobs barely overlap.

What is the cheapest honest stack?

Microsoft Clarity free, Lighthouse free in Chrome, Screaming Frog free to 500 URLs, and a free Revslip audit for the conversion read. Four tools, nothing spent, and you will know which one deserves money next.
